Biofoam Surfboard

a couple of nights ago i saw this thing on t.v. about these biofoam surfboards. i hadn't thought about it before, but traditional surfboards are made 100% out of toxic materials -- from the petroleum based cores to the chemical resin. a traditional surfboard will not biodegrade, and will sit in the landfill for forever. plus, the people manufacture the surfboards get sick from working with all those toxins, which is what led ned mcmahon to start making biofoam boards -- his friend was killed by cancer after manufacturing surfboards for many years.

biofoam boards use soy oil instead of petroleum based stuff for the core. they are wrapped with sustainable fabric -- like hemp, and the resins are biodegradable as well. about 50% of the board is made from agricultural products (biodegradable). one thing i liked about the interview i watched with ned mcmahon was that he made sure to mention that these boards are not the perfect solution, and they aren't "green" boards -- although they are an important step in that direction. home blown usa (the company that makes the biofoam board) is continuing to research new ways to use sustainable, biodegradable materials to make a surfboard that can truly be called "green."

so, if you're in the market for a new surfboard, get one of these!
